A Day of First’s

  • Today as I’m’ writing this I’m on the balcony of our hotel at the beach.
  • Right now, the band is finishing up their rehearsal in Charlotte.
  • Right now one of my awesome sound guys is paired up with a sound professional we’ve contracted to train and grow this team of devoted volunteers.
  • Today is truly a day of first’s, I’ve been on staff for over 4 years and have never done what is occurring right now. I’m not at church, I’m on vacation. I’m not worshipping anywhere, except in God’s sanctuary (aka the beach), and I’m not worried about leading anything right now. The band is in the capable hands of John Moore, a local worship leader who I’ve just recently had the pleasure of making his acquaintance. The only thing I regret is not seeing this awesome thing unfold from the perspective of our crowd at church today.

My sound team has not had the best of my leadership in the last few months, but we saw that the value they add to the service is indispensable, so we made the call to hire a sound professional to come and train this team.
***LEADERSHIP TIP*** If you’re not “the guy” don’t try to be, hire or train someone to be “the guy”
I’ve had the pleasure to work with Jeremiah Clever a few times on recording projects and know that he is probably one of the best in town at what he does. I fully trust that our team will be better because of the value he will add in these coming months.

Now, I must say that every ministry leader should get to the place where they can step off the stage and the ministry still happens. I just haven’t had the ability in the past 4 years. But something clicked about 6 months ago, and I began changing major area’s of the worship ministry at Team Church. I asked God to show me how to grow the team. The funny thing is the numbers dropped, but we’ve seen tremendous growth in the team, spiritually and in their performance.

I’m proud to lead this team and even prouder of the fact that they have grown to this level of leading other’s in worship with the God-given talents and gifts they possess. I’m glad that I am not there today (though I know I’m missing out). I know it will be an incredible experience for our church.

What fresh, new thing is God doing in your ministry these days? Maybe this week you can take a step out in faith to try something for the first time and see what God has in store for you and your congregation.

    Easter Sunday: Set-List 4/04/2010

On This Hill – Ultimate Victory

Our Easter Service this year was one of my favorites. We had many new families and faces in the crowd. We kept it really low-tech and focused on the true meaning which was straight up RESURRECTION power! Pastor Kenny spoke about the disciples and their view of the events between Friday and Sunday. He asked everyone in attendance, how the resurrection is going to change their lives. Knowing that Jesus rose from the grave should give us hope for the future . . .
Here is the set-list . . . we wanted to catch people up from Friday to Sunday so we used song and scripture to re-tell the story.

Old Rugged Cross / Death In His Grave / Rise and Sing – TC Worship Arrangement
    We Stand – Lee McDerment
    Jesus Messiah – Chris Tomlin
    Revelation Song – Kari Jobe
What Faith Can Do - Kutless
Rise and Sing - Fee Band

We were trying to think through what the next series should be after Easter. We realized that in preparation for Easter Sunday, that a lot of people celebrate the resurrection, but live their lives from that day on without the resurrection power. So we entitled our next series Messy, because Real life is not always clean and simple.

Don’t miss next week as we kick off the series: Messy / Wipe Away Guilt & Shame

    Primadonna

I swear I will never raise my son to think of himself in this way . . . Although . . . Carlos is a good dad, and an awesome worship leader/creative coach . . . but still, Losiah should probably get over his aspiration to be a “single lady” . . .

“Oh let us Adore the Son of Glory . . “

Some more great musical goodness from local worship leader John Mark McMillan . . .

As you prepare for Easter no matter where you attend and no matter what it is you will find yourself being preoccupied doing. Remember the most important most impactful thing you can do this weekend is “adore the son of glory, crown Him, stand Him up”. Let Him reign in your hearts and for those leading, let Him lead you into His presence leading up to this weekend . . .

Have an incredible weekend, praying that wherever you are, you experience the resurrection like never before and the Jesus Christ is glorified, drawing everyone unto Himself.

    Kyle Dillard performs “Shine”

My good friend and mentor in Worship Ministry Kyle Dillard and his band at Lake Forest Church performed “Shine” a couple of weeks ago. Here is a live video of their performance. Kyle and his band really do a number on this tune, proud to know these guys. Check out the horn section, they really make this song.

    No Reserves

About a year ago, Kenny Hibbard our Lead Pastor was sharing the story of William Borden during one of his messages. If you are unfamiliar with it you can read the whole thing here. Below is a phrase that became his legacy:

In his Bible he had written these lines, one at a time, over a short period of time:
NO RESERVES, NO RETREATS, NO REGRETS

If you ask yourself how you’re living right now in light of the amazing things God has done on your behalf. Does it resemble the sentiment that William Borden wrote as he began his missionary journey to China “Say ‘no’ to self and ‘yes’ to Jesus every time.” Do you say ‘no’ a lot. Do you back down from things that you know would help you grow, stretch you or simply allow you to experience all that God has to offer you in this life. Imagine with me, if you were to live your life saying ‘yes’ to Christ every time. You probably would experience many awkward moments as your faith in Him began to define your life, but remember this life isn’t about you being comfortable, rather it’e more about being ‘conformed’ to the likeness of Christ.
As you prepare to lead worship, attend worship this week. Come prepared with this in mind, what am I holding back form God this week that will inhibit me from truly engaging in the life He’s called me to. Am I loving others, serving in my area of gifts and passions, giving of my resources to the local church and lastly . . . sharing my faith with others around me.

I challenge you to begin today by examining you heart and life, and make steps, HUGE steps towards Christ in the areas where you have ben ‘holding out’ and reserving things for your own comforts, safety, or pride.

    “Turn around, face the fields.
You’ll never know, until you’ve tasted and seen.
There’s a place you can run.
Recklessly abandoned to he arms o the Son.”

You can watch this short documentary for more on this incredible story of reckless abandon by this great missionary leader.
